This dance work, by Weird Nest, powerfully communicates, through visceral dexterity, some of the pressing and increasing concerns around marine environmental pollution and what we, as individuals and community, may do to mitigate them.

This recorded “staged development” performance by Weird Nest and co-director Dean Walsh, was supported by Critical Path (Australia’s leading centre for choreographic research and development), during the last few weeks of lockdown in 2020.

Weeks prior to commencing this near final stage of developing (first commenced in 2018), the creative team decided to gear it towards a broadcast quality live stream to an online audience of 60 people per night over two nights – with only ten people allowed in-person. We felt the need to remain sharing creativity was so vital at the time. This was especially so, given the themes within and the uncertainty of travel (anywhere) for the near future.

With interest growing among some presenters, it is hoped that, at some time in the not-too-distant-future, this work will be completed and presented in front of a live, in-person, audience.

This Sydney Fringe Festival recorded presentation of that work-in-progress, comes in lieu of being unable to premiere the completed stage of our new work, Context Is Everything, in this years’ festival.

We’re very pleased to be able to offer this as an alternative and to remain connected to this vital Sydney-based festival that celebrates the diversity work within the independent arts community.

The stream will also include a Zoom panel, moderated by Sydney Fringe Programs Producer, Charley Sanders, discussing the live-streaming of this work, its content and form, in context of the stringent lockdown situation we all find ourselves in this year.

We hope you’ll join us. Let’s discuss the creative variables of engaging with difficult times that affect all of us. Let’s make hope feel real – whatever the complexity within it.
