Visual Art & Design

Tim Johnson: Lennox Street Open Studio

Sat 17 - Sun 18 Sep | 7 hours Lennox Street Studios

The show consists of current work and some earlier pieces with various influences including Papunya painting, Tibetan art, Buddhism, Ufology and imagery from some music styles including the blues.

My work has continued to evolve over many years. I have tried to put imagery from experiences that come from travel, research and study into my art practice. It is a type of painting that engages with social issues as well as art theory. My earlier practice included conceptual art, performance art and mixed media work such as artist’s books, video, photography, instillation and music. It is the evolution of the painting process itself that influences my current practice. The journey is interesting but with an informed painting process, chance and technique can come together to create art that is contemplative and mindful.

I have exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. My work was included in “Australia” at the Royal Academy of Art in London, Documenta 9 in Germany, in Antipodean Currents at the Guggenheim museum in New York and in shows in China, Japan, France, New Zealand and so on. It is included in many public galleries including the National Gallery in Canberra, the MCA and the AGNSW in Sydney as well as many other collections. It was the subject of a retrospective at AGNSW and GOMA in 2010 called Painting Ideas and is the subject of a recently published monograph titled Spiritual Journeying.
