In the middle of the night, above the valley with the lake, a man wakes up alone next to his wife. On a far distant shore upon the queerest fantasy sits a young couple licking ice cream in the sand. At a treetop coffee shop, on a guilty autumn morning, the sinner sips his second latte. And in a bumpy, tumbling ship, sailing and soaring along Sydney’s harbour, a "girl" struggles to be anywhere at all. Singer-songwriter Byron Davis presents The Corporeal Life of Seafaring, a song-cycle of thirteen original works exploring identity, obsession, isolation, and dysphoria. Almost an anthology and not quite a narrative, this offbeat slice of gig-theatre weaves a winding thread of unique and intimate stories, each one rooted in the cultural context of Sydney life and the unfurling mysteries of her beautiful bodies of water. Accompanied by members of The Bancrofts and directed by theatre devisor Annie Robbits, this performance marries the vulnerability and rawness of folk songwriting with the surreality and majesty of physical theatre. The Corporeal Life of Seafaring connects us through a shared, human experience of confusion and realisation in which one is neither wholly innocent nor guilty. Neither desired nor disregarded. Nothing like a man and far from being a woman.
