Undine – An Australian Ghost Story is a multidisciplinary work blending theatre, music and dance, and a cautionary tale about confronting our demons.
A fresh take on the Australian Gothic, the work crafts an eerie atmosphere of the mystical with a sense of unease. Joadja, NSW 1892. The country town is booming with oil mining. Undine’s family are one of many German immigrant families making the best of their new life in the south. That is, until young Undine walks to the river and doesn’t return. Come 1969, Bertha’s family lives downriver in Berrima, Joadja is long since deserted, all the Germans are gone, and the river seems hungry, insatiable. It craves something. Presented by Wren Wants a Top Hat, Undine – An Australian Ghost Story, references the narrative of the German Folktale by Friedrich de la Motte Foque and uses the music of Carl Reinecke’s flute sonata of the same name to create the mood and atmosphere of this new Australian Ghost story.
