In Scandinavian folklore, a changeling is a child stolen by trolls and replaced with something other. This theatrical concert uses that idea as a metaphor for identity, memory and becoming. Through original songs and storytelling in a music genre bending electronic pop rock opera style, Axel takes the audience on a journey through childhood, family, gender, myth, survival and self-invention, with wearable art and Viking-inspired Valkyrie crowns forming an important visual element of the performance.Performing live alongside recordings of his former female-presenting voice and a choir of his own voices recorded over a decade of musical life, Axel creates duets across time, singing with the people he used to be while standing firmly in the person he has become.Moving between humour, storytelling, powerful vocals and theatrical characters, Changeling is a strange, funny, moving and deeply personal theatrical concert about transformation, survival and finding your way home to yourself.The music moves across multiple languages and musical worlds, blending Folk, Classical, Electronic and Afro-inspired rhythms influenced by Axel’s early life in South Africa.
